Too bad the administrator of this community has long ago left Live Journal.  In the interest of keeping it going, I'll ask is anybody else going on RAGBRAI this year (2010)?

This will be year 16 for me.

Says the Register:

"RAGBRAI XXXVIII will treat riders to one of the shortest and flattest routes ever as it winds through northern Iowa from Sioux City to Dubuque."

"The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa runs July 25-31 with overnight stops in Sioux City, Storm Lake, Algona, Clear Lake, Charles City, Waterloo, Manchester and Dubuque."

Sounds good to me!  But RAGBRAI always sounds good.

I had a RAGBRAI dream last night.  There's not really a point to this, unless maybe you're into interpreting dreams or something.

This dream day of RAGBRAI was starting in Ames and we were staying at the house of a friend who used to live there (he doesn't live in Ames anymore but in the dream he did).  When we arrived at the first passthough town I had no recollection of the ride and realized that I had none of my biking essentials with me.  No helmet, no biking shorts (just loose exercise shorts) or shoes, no fanny pack or wallet.  I had no idea what was going on so I decided I was going to have to bike back to the starting point all by myself to get my stuff and then try to catch up to my group.  It was 10 miles out on a 76 mile day so even in my dream state I was able to calculate that it would be a 96 mile day when I was done.  I've only rode that many miles in a day once before but still felt committed to try to do it.

I didn't get as far as getting to my bike when I woke up- my son was asking for waffles.  What's the significance?  I don't know!

Anybody else have RAGBRAI dreams?

Jealous of you guys!
I hope you come back and tell me all about it! My fiance, Shane, is with Team Bat this year, and it sounds like it's going well so far! The reason I'm not doing RAGBRAI this year is because I'm getting married in less than 3 weeks, so I have stuff to get together, and I don't want really weird tanlines with my strapless dress! I know... LAME! I want to go next year, though. If Shane has a good time with Team Bat (out of Des Moines) this year, I will probably ride with them next year. I hope you all are rockin' the roads of Iowa! Have a few beers for me!

Meeting on RAGBRAI
I will preface this by saying I have a terrible track record of meeting any livejournalers on RAGBRAI, I am 0 - 2, so I hesitate to make the suggestion.  It's just hard for me to keep a schedule when I'm on vacation and riding with a large group, so the chances that I will be at a certain place at a certain time are just small.  But I'm willing to try again.

"Sitdownshutup" (who started this group) has met a couple of people in past years but I know that she is not going on the ride this year.  I was able to talk to her on the cell phone once briefly but it was cut off.  Cell phones on RAGBRAI are very unreliable.

So if anybody would like to make a meeting suggestion I'll marker it on hand and try not to wash it off.  One suggestion:  www dot teambrewhaha dot com has a Bar Guide listing many of the fine drinking establishments along the way.  I  will be in many or maybe even most of them if anybody sees one they'd like to make a meeting place.

Also if you see Team NAD ask if Otis is around (that's me).  Bus and
Jersey representations below the cut.

Places to stay

Our team has worked out some of our places to stay in the overnight towns but there are some towns that we still don't have housing.  I might as well ask out here if anybody has any leads.

The situation is we have a bus, about 25 mostly well behaved people and about 20 tents.   We've applied for housing through the official channels but they came back with nothing.  While we can camp in the official  RAGBRAI campgrounds it's not our first preference.  Ideally someone with a house near the downtown area would let us set up tents in the yard and park the bus on the street.  That's all we really need.  Use of a garden hose and bathroom would be nice too.

The towns we need places to camp are the following:  Rock Rapids on Sat 7/21, Humboldt on Mon 7/23, Independence on Thurs 7/26 and Dyersville on Fri 7/27.  Let me know if you've got anything.  Thanks much!

Holy crap, guys! It's less than 2 weeks away! Who's excited? What food are you really "geared" up for? Have you been to any of these counties in Iowa before? I've been to some in central Iowa, but the beginning and end of the route will be totally new to me!

I got this e-mail forward from my uncle, who rides annually. Not sure how many people have received this, and the formatting sucks, but I'm finding it helpful to prepare:

Questionnaire for RAGBRAI 2007

76 days until RAGBRAI!  This group has about a dozen members but its been pretty quiet.  I wonder how many are riding this year.

Here's a little questionnaire for RAGBRAI 2007:

1) Are you going on RAGBRAI this year (2007)?
2) Are you planning to ride your bike the whole week?
3) How many RAGBRAIs have you been on?
4) Do you currently live in Iowa?
5) What are your 3 favorite things about RAGBRAI (or things you are looking forward to)?
6) What is your least favorite thing about RAGBRAI (or the thing you are dreading)?

Veggie on RAGBRAI
Are there any vegetarians going on RAGBRAI?

What are the food options for a vegetarian on RAGBRAI? I lived in Iowa a few years ago, and I remember there not being a lot of protein available that wasn't meat/cheese. Is it slim pickens to find beans and leaner protein? My mom is very worried about my being a vegetarian on this, due to the limited options.

I'm going to go ahead and pack some protein anyway, I was just curious.

Sadly, I will be missing this year. Reminds me a little of '96. That was a good year. This would be a great year to do multiple centuries.

Hey guys!

I think my family and I are doing RAGBRAI this summer! I've never been, but I've spent some time in Iowa before. I'm really looking forward to going back.

YouTube Videos of RAGBRAI
OK, I've been a bit of a YouTube junkie for a while.  But I actually didn't notice until today that in LiveJournal I can embed YouTube videos.  So here are 2 videos that I made from my RAGBRAI footage on the last two RAGBRAIs.

It's not too early to be thinking about RAGBRAI, is it?

RAGBRAI (best ever)
This is my first day back in front of a computer since the ride. It was a good one for me, rode the whole way, no major disasters.

Sorry I missed those of you who met on Tuesday, I got to Adel at about 5PM and stayed until about 7PM. I knew I was running late but looked for you anyway while being teased for having a bandaid on my head.

I caught a lousy head cold on about the second day and had it the rest of the week but tried not to let it slow me down too much. The latest night out was Thursday when we outlasted the IHP in Ladora and rolled into Marengo at 8:30PM, while (inexplicably) wearing sleeveless tshirts and boxers over our biking gear. I later found out they were castoffs from the bar who were prevented from using them when their wet tshirt/boxer contest was cancelled. We set up tents and showered in the dark that night before heading into town. Good times though.

Three team mates had brushes with Lance. A couple on a tandem (Lance said they call tandems "divorce machines") rode alongside him long enough to have a little conversation and then they passed him on a downhill. Another was in a beer garden when Lance came in briefly. They didn't allow anyone else to enter while he was there so she was able to get pretty close to him.

On the last day heading out of the second to last town (Moscow) a team mate got a flat tire. I think it was the only flat for us the whole week. I stayed behind to help so missed out on riding into Muscatine as a group but it worked out ok as I caught up to a few of the others who'd stopped off for free beer at a farm house.

Overall a great week! Gotta work on getting my pictures up.

Well, RAGBRAI was awesome this year. I rode 4 1/2 days this year, which is 3X the amount I did last year. My butt didn't even hurt that bad. The reasons I took days off were 1)Monday - I was kind of hungover, so I only did half a day (that day also sucked the worst), 2)Thursday - my sister-in-law wanted to ride (she'd been driving), so I let her ride my bike, and 3) Saturday - we had to go to a wedding, so skipped out early. So much fun, though! My legs feel so strong now! Fiance saw Lance and rode with him for about 2 minutes. I didn't see him at all. The Register says he's supposed to ride the whole thing next year. I'm ambivalent about it... it was kind of annoying that every conversation was about him. But it was also kind of cool. On Tuesday I met up with deepfry in Adel. That was fun. On the way out of the bar, I totally wiped out and broke my sandal. Not that I was drunk or anything. :) I hope everyone had an awesome time. Post your adventures here.

I'm off to Minnesota for a Dashboard Confessional concert tomorrow night, then a week at the lake, then down to Okoboji for a couple of days. Then real life starts again.

So I was SUPPOSED to be, well, NOT HERE IN DENVER COLORADO...but doing ragbrai with my boyfriend this week. HOWEVER due to me recently starting school (and only being able to take off 3 days per quarter without failing) I was unable to attend this year. Therefore, Joe (lucky guy) is there without me probably having an amazing time.....and I am still here....Sucks for me but I do hope he is having fun-and why wouldn't he?!

tuesday madness in adel
I think we're all okay with the bar idea. I know I am.
So Otis/retrofitz posted his cell if you wanted it. Here is mine: 515-468-7877... I am Jill... I posted it last year and no one's stolen my identity or anything, so I'm okay with posting it here. I know last year Otis and I had a hard time hooking up when we just had a town picked out... cell reception wasn't the greatest, and there were just too many people and too much fun to be had. The plan is Huffy's in Adel around 3-4 (and maybe later, if we're having a good time), and I will try to make a sign saying LJ, but if not... Otis will have a bandaid on his head, and you've seen him in his icon, kiwijt will have a Once cycling cap on, and I will try to wear my bright pink Iowa State t-shirt (it's hard to miss)... although if it's hot, I might do the tank top thing. Here's a pic of me in case you see me at the bar:
See you guys next week!
